Concurrent reductions of serum leptin and lipids during weight loss in obese men with type II diabetes.

چکیده
The aim of the study was to examine the effects of weight reduction by exercise and diet on metabolic control in obese subjects with insulin resistance, particularly investigating if changes in serum leptin concentrations were directly associated with improvements in metabolic control. Twenty obese men (48 ± 8 yr; body mass index 32.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2) with previously diagnosed type II diabetes mellitus were assigned to a 4-wk intervention program of exercise (2,200 kcal/wk) and diet (1,000 kcal/day; 50% carbohydrates, 25% protein, 25% fat; polyunsaturated-to-saturated fatty acid ratio 1.0). Intervention induced significant reductions in body weight and serum leptin levels, and improvements in lipoprotein profile and glucose control. Reductions in leptin levels were directly associated with reductions in serum triglycerides and cholesterol, a finding that was independent of improvements in glucose control. These data show that serum leptin concentrations can be reduced with caloric restriction and exercise in male patients with type II diabetes, and they suggest a direct relationship between leptin and lipoprotein metabolism that is not solely due to weight reduction.

متن کاملEffect of exogenous leptin on serum levels of lipids, glucose, renal and hepatic variables in both genders of obese and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
Objective(s): Leptin exerts various effects on appetite and body weight. Disruption of the obesitygene is precedent to fatness. Insulin or glucose elevates leptin, but streptozotocin reduces it. However, controversial data exist for the effects of leptin on diabetes and leptin level in each gender. Leptin can damage the kidney function but little evidence exists for its hepatic effects. The aim...
متن کاملComparison of the Effects of Cuminum Cyminuml and Sibutramine on Weight, Serum Leptin, Glucose and Lipids in Rat
Objectives: Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases in the world. It affects 6.6% of world population and about 3 million individuals in Iran. Nowadays chemical and herbal medicines are widely prescribed to cure obesity. In Iran, cumin (Cuminum Cyminum L.) is a plant used in traditional medicine to cure obesity, and some of the new studies have suggested that cumin has a role in d...

Background and Objectives: Obesity and overweight in addition to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, greatly effects reproductive health as well. Although the positive effects of exercise on weight control and minimizing cardiovascular risk factors has been proven, the effects may vary depending on the type and intensity of the exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the ef...
متن کاملSerum resistin a biomarker of type II diabetes development
Background: Resistin and ghrelin are hormones that have roles in the glucose and lipid homeostasis and weight regulation. Human studies regarding resistin and ghrelin in diabetic patients are scarce, especially in the cases of normotensive and non-obese patients. This study was designed to illuminate some of the missing points. Methods: Eighty diabetic patients and eighty healthy individuals par...
